MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
DIRECTIVE FOR UNDERGRADUATE DOUBLE MAJOR PROGRAMS

Aim
Article 1

The aim of the double major program is to allow academically successful students to work towards a second undergraduate diploma in another department.

Establishing a Double Major Program
Article 2

A double major program is specified upon the recommendation of the Department and the Faculty Committee with the approval of the University Senate.

Double Major Program

Article 3

The double major program consists of all the courses of the major program of the related department.

Application and Acceptance to a Double Major Program
Article 4

a. Each department announces its double major programs at the beginning of every semester, specifying its double major quota.

b. The annual double major quota for one department can not be more than 20% of the number of the first semester (of the first year) students in that department.

c. Applications to a double major program are made to the Registrar's Office by submitting the completed application form and receipt of transcript fee prior to the deadline specified by the University Senate.

d. To be eligible for a double major program, a student has to have been successful in all the courses taken thus far, (courses with "W" grade are considered as "not taken") have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00, and be in the top 20% of the class rank in the major program.

e. Students may apply to a double major program no earlier than the third and no later than the fifth semester of their major program. The students registered in a minor program whose cumulative grade point average in the major and the minor programs is 3.00 and above can apply to the related double major program of the department that offers the minor program they follow without any consideration of the criterion of the number of semester.

f. The applications that meet the specified criteria are taken into account by the Registrar’s Office.

g. Acceptance is subject to the decision of the Administrative Committee of the Faculty to which the concerned department belongs.

h. A student cannot register at the same time to more than one double major program or to both a double major program and a minor program.

ASSISTANCE

Article 5

In order to assist the students in selecting and planning the courses for their double major program, each Department Chairperson will appoint a Double Major Program Coordinator, who will be responsible for ensuring that the program is carried out properly. It is also this coordinator's duty to maintain contact with each student's major program advisor.

MAJOR AND DOUBLE MAJOR PROGRAMS

Article 6

The success or graduation of a student in his major program should in no way be affected by his double major program. Separate grade reports and transcripts are issued for the double major program. All the courses in the double major program are indicated in the transcripts for double major program.

Courses to be counted in both programs must be agreed upon by the two concerned departments. Those taken prior to application for a double major program must be approved by the Faculty Administrative Committee upon acceptance. Those courses that will be taken later for both programs will be listed on the semester registration for both programs and will appear on both transcripts. These courses are considered to be one course while calculating the course load.

In the event that a student withdraws from a course counted for both programs, the withdrawal will be taken into account for both programs. A student is not allowed to withdraw in the event that the total number of courses taken in the major and the double major  programs is below 2/3 of the course load in the major program.

In order for the students registered in a double major program to complete these programs, the students must take courses with not less than 36 credits that are in the program of the related double major program and are offered by the department which offers the concerned program. These courses should not be the courses that are taken for both the major and the double major programs and/or are counted in both programs.

COURSE LOAD

Article 7

a. The students of the double major programs with a cumulative grade point average between 2.00 and 2.49 in the major program can take in one semester in the major and the double major programs up to 3 more courses with credits than the total number of courses they can take in their major programs.

b. The students of the double major programs with cumulative grade point average of 2.50 and above in the major program can take in one semester in the major and the double major programs up to 4 more courses with credits than the total number of courses they can take in their major programs.

Success and Graduation
Article 8

a. The description of success in relation to the semester and the cumulative grade point average is the same as the one for the major programs.

b. There is no success rank order for the students of the double major programs.

c. A student who is eligible for graduation in a major program and has completed a double major program with a grade point average of 2.00 will receive a second major undergraduate diploma. A student who is eligible to graduate from a double major program will not be given a double major undergraduate diploma before the student is eligible to graduate from the major program.

d. A student who is eligible for graduation in a major program but has not completed the double major program can be allotted at most two extra semesters to complete the program. This time can be extended by a Faculty Administrative Committee decision. Those students who graduate from a major program will receive a diploma from the concerned department at the end of the final semester. For the whole of the extended period, the student will continue to pay the tuition required by the department of the double major program, based on the total number of semesters spent in the undergraduate program. If the student enrolls in a graduate program, the tuition for graduate school will be paid as well. The Faculty that offers the double major program is responsible for making decisions regarding those students.

e. The training periods in the major and double major programs are determined with the mutual agreement of both departments.

f. A student who left or was dismissed from a double major program is eligible to receive the certificate for the minor program if the student met the requirements of the courses s/he took until s/he left or was dismissed from the program and of a minor program the student chooses offered by the department that also offers the double major program. If the concerned student could not meet all the requirements of the minor program s/he preferred, s/he has the right to apply for the minor program to complete the incomplete courses without any semester restriction.

TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT LEAVE, DISMISSAL FROM A DOUBLE MAJOR PROGRAM

Article 9

a. A student can give up a double major program.

b. The students who are registered to a minor or double major program can apply to other minor or double major programs provided that they meet the application criteria and can register for a new program provided that they leave the previous program.

c. A student in a double major program cannot transfer to a double major program without realizing the requirements in the regulation related with the transfer status between universities in his or her major program.

d. A student who is given leave from his major program will automatically be given the same status in his double major program. In the event that a student is prevented from taking a course because it is not offered or conflicts with another, the student can be given a one semester leave from the double major program with the approval of the concerned department and school.

e. Any student who neglects to take the required courses for two consecutive semesters without official leave will be dismissed from the double major program.

f. Any student whose cumulative grade point average in the major program falls below 2.00 will be dismissed from the double major program.

g. A student who drops out of a double major program will not be required to repeat the double major program courses he was unsuccessful in.
