Faculty or Graduate School Administrative Boards can grant leave of absence to students. This period is not taken into account when detemining the maximum period of study (except exchange students).
Maximum duration of leave of absence:
Maximum duration of leave of absence is two semesters in English Preparatory Class, and four semesters in Higher Vocational School and graduate and undergraduate programs. The leave of absence is not counted to the maximum period of study allowed to complete an academic program.Only the following excuses are accepted for LEAVE OF ABSENCE:
Medical reasons (A medical report must be submitted to and/or approved by, the METU Medical Center)
Economic or family reasons that unexpectedly arise such as illnesses, death, or natural disasters.
Assignment to study abroad or a mission related to your education
When courses required for graduation are not opened in that semester
Military duty (the document of military duty should be submitted)
Application period:
Students should apply for a leave of absence before registrations close. Only students in exceptional cases will be granted leave of absence after registrations close.
Students should do their registration and pay their tuition fee as if they will not be granted leave of absence just in case.
If the student applies for a leave of absence after registrations close, without having completed their registration and / or not having paid their tuition fee, his / her application will not be taken into account. A student in this situation is not considered a student. His / her status is not registered. Not Registered students cannot apply for a leave of absence.
Where to apply:
Application form is got from http://www.oidb.metu.edu.tr/english/forms.htm and application petitions should be given to the Department Chair. The student will be notified by the Registrar’s Office about the result of the application. The status of the studetns for that semester will be "ON LEAVE" .
Tuition Payments:
Students are required to pay the tuition if they apply leave of absence for one semester. If students are granted leave of absence for one year, they are not required to pay the tuition.
Students who faced with problems about tuition must visit Office of Student Accounts.
