APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS for
INTERNATIONAL SPECIAL STUDENTS
to MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
We are pleased that you are interested in attending METU as a Special Student. Please read the following instructions carefully, complete the application form and return it along with the required documents to the Registrar's Office.
Special students are those who are allowed to take some courses, although they are not enrolled in one of the programs in the university. No diplomas or titles are given to special students. However, they can get official transcripts at the end of each semester. If they are accepted as a graduate student to METU later, the grades which are approved by the concerned administrative committee can be added to their grade point average.
Who can apply?
Students currently enrolled in other universities or institutions of higher education, or who have graduated from such institutions, may apply to attend specific courses at METU as special students. Applicants must have appropriate documents (degrees, transcripts) that they are attending, or have attended, universities and institutions of higher education. Persons who have been dismissed from any institution of higher education for disciplinary reasons or because of failing grades are not eligible.
How to apply?
Applicants must fill the application form and list the course(s) at METU they wish to attend. Approval of the course instructor and the chairperson of the Department are required. In making a decision about an application, instructors generally examine transcripts or consider the academic program the applicant has followed.
Applicants, who want to study as a special student, may apply in two ways:
1) By applying personally to the course instructor: They should take the completed application form to the course instructor and take the required approvals from the instructor and the department chairperson. Then, they should submit the approved application form to the Registrar's Office in order to take the Letter of Acceptance. For registration deadline, please see our academic calendar:

2) By sending their documents to the Registrar's Office: Those who will apply in this way should send these documents to the Registrar's Office:
" Completed application form
" Copy of diploma (for graduates) or student certificate (for current students)
" Original copy of transcript (If transcripts are not in English, a notarized or attested translation should be provided)
" Copy of passport
" 1 photograph
" Receipt of application fee
These documents should have been sent to the Registrar's Office no later than;
FEBRUARY 29, 2008 (for Spring Semester)

Receipts should be attached to application forms. Applicant's name should be clearly written.
* * Please do not forget that online application is not available.
* * * In the Summer Semester, student visa is not required from the special students for registration.

How to register?
Persons whose applications are approved receive a Letter of Acceptance from the Registrar's Office. Special students who are nationals of other countries will need this Letter of Acceptance to obtain a Visa which, in most cases, can be obtained only through the Turkish Consulate in the applicant's home country. These procedures may take several weeks and should be completed before registration deadline. Students who have been legally residing in Turkey for at least one year are exempted from this visa requirement. They should contact the Security Office to extend their resident permit. The Ministry of Interior has the sole discretion in granting residence permits.

Passports should be shown to the officials during registration.

GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Applications by nationals of The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be processed along with applications of Turkish nationals.
2. METU has two regular semesters and one summer semester. The Fall semester begins in September, the Spring in February. The Academic Calendar for the following academic year is announced in March giving the exact dates of registration, examinations and beginning of classes.

3. Special students do not have medical coverage. Special students must pay for any medication and for any medical expenses themselves. For this reason, students are advised to purchase Health Insurance before arriving to Turkey.
4. METU does not offer scholarships, summer work or any other form of financial aid.
