GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TO METU
Dear Applicant,
We are pleased you are considering to apply to Middle East Technical University. International students may apply to one of the following programs of our University:
- Undergraduate Programs
- Graduate Programs
- Undergraduate transfer
- Special students
1. Applicants to any program who are accepted to METU will receive a Letter of Acceptance from the Registrar's Office.
2. All foreign students regardless of status are required to have a Student Visa to register at METU. This Visa may be obtained from a Turkish Consulate in the applicant's country using the Letter of Acceptance.
3. Documentation of proficiency in English is required of all students entering METU. Applicants entering METU as freshmen and undergraduate students who have been accepted as transfers must take an English Proficiency Examination (except for the applicants whose language of instruction in their current university is English). Applicants accepted to undergraduate programs at METU, or who expect to be accepted, may submit the results of international English examinations such as TOEFL, IELTS. Or alternatively, they may take the English Proficiency Examination offered by the School of Foreign Languages at METU. This examination is offered once a year in September to students entering as undergraduates, in September and June to students entering as graduates.
Acceptable scores for these tests
Students applying to transfer as undergraduates will not be accepted to METU if scores on the proficiency examinations are not acceptable. Applicants at the Freshman level who fail to get an acceptable level on one of these examinations will be required to attend classes in the Basic English Department at METU for one year before enrolling in their undergraduate program. Freshmen without formal test results will automatically be placed in a class in the Deaprtment of Basic English. Any questions concerning the language requirements should be directed to the Registrar's Office (oidb@metu.edu.tr).
4. The academic year consists of two 16 week semesters and one summer session. Fall semester begins in September, Spring semester in February and the summer session in July.
5. METU does not offer scholarships, summer work or financial aid of any kind to foreign students. There are some foreign students in our University who have been granted scholarships by the Turkish Ministry of Education. However, these are students who have been selected by the Ministry of Education in their own countries.
6. METU does not offer assistantships for foreign students.
7. Applicants who are nationals of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be processed along with the applications of Turkish Nationals.
8. There are dormitories located on the campus . Students may apply for a place in the dormitories only after they have completed registration. Students, however, are not required to stay in the dormitories.
9. It should be noted that tuition fees may change due to inflation in Turkey, there is generally an increase in fees each year. Fees for the academic year is announced during the registration period.
10. City buses and private minibuses (Dolmus) provide regular services between the city (Ankara) and the Campus.
11. Fees paid by undergraduates, masters and doctoral at registration include health care coverage. Special students, however, do not pay these fees and as a result do not have health coverage. The University Health Center will provide free medical examinations, free first aid services, some emergency care and some minor dental care to undergraduate students and graduate students.
12. All international students are required to have health insurance, which costs 250-300USD annualy. Health insurance can be purchased during registrations.
